It all begins with landscape
Jo’s work is abstracted and atmospheric; concerned with conveying a sense of place. atmosphere and light.
Ideas come from walking in often wide open, seemingly empty landscapes…Jo is fascinated by layers in landscape and time as well as building layers in paint. Her work is instinctive and particularly plays with liminal spaces, such as the ‘edges’ where land, sea, sky, and water come together.
Her work is built up very gradually, in a great many opaque and translucent layers, in oils and cold wax, acrylics and mixed media. She often works on several paintings at once, and each one can take months to complete.
Jo’s work is in private and corporate collections across the UK and beyond.
Jo York holds a BA HONs degree and a PGCE. She has worked across many art forms; including print, surface pattern design and illustration, and now focusses on her practice as a painter. Alongside making her own work, Jo has had a long career as an Art Education Consultant and as a mentor for emerging and developing artists. She is a highly experienced tutor and workshop leader. Her work has been featured in many magazines and recently in the BBC series Boat Story.
